city of whitehorse’s new old logo

posted Jul 06, 2011  |  by Jennifer  |  11 Comments

Back in April, Eleanor posted an article in response to the City of Whitehorse's rebranding initiative -- a hot topic at the time. But we haven't heard much about it since. . .

Well, in case you were wondering about the final outcome, the above is the retooled old/new official City of Whitehorse logo and tagline.

After the controversy a few months ago, the dust has obviously settled and the final product has slipped rather quietly into our midst. I think that in itself is worth noting, but I'm wondering if there's any more to say about it.

What do you think?

fresh meat at aasman

We have a new aasmanite!
Neil was the Director of Marketing and Sales for Yukon Brewing and Yukon Spirits before joining our team. He brings a wealth of marketing and reaching things on high shelves experience to aasman, so we're really excited to have him on board.
Read on to learn more about Neil. . .

Neil Stephen, Account Manager

How long have you been in the Yukon? Since October 2009, nearly two years. I visited for a friend’s wedding and loved the place. Two months later my wife and I were proud holders of high school-style Yukon drivers licenses.
First impressions?   People here value things that matter.
Where were you living and working before Whitehorse?   I lived and worked in Antigonish, Nova Scotia in a marketing/recruitment role for St. Francis Xavier University (St. FX) with a focus on new media. Yes, I “facebooked” for a living and explained twitter roughly 7-8 times a day. (These were the pre-Ashton Kutcher days of twitter.)
What's the best trait you bring to your work here at aasman?
I can reach things on high shelves; it’s a talent I’ve been honing everyday since I was 15. I’m also good at using jokes as answers to questions I find embarrassing.

And now for the really important questions:

Favourite sandwich?   Turkey pesto on focaccia
Best tunes to work by?  The Weakerthans or Cake or James Taylor or Jenn Grant or Jay-Z.
Most exotic travel experience?   Chicken, Alaska was pretty surreal.
Snowboard or Skis?   Skis.
Beverage you can't live without?   Tea.
Any final thoughts you'd like to share with us at this time?
(Editor’s note: Neil missed this question, but I think he’d probably say that working in the same end of the office as Jen is by far the highlight of being at aasman.)

Help us welcome Neil to the fold. I'm sure there's much more to learn about Neil, so post your questions for him in comments (preferably ones that he may find embarrassing.)

through the lens of an aasmanite

One of the things that Lytro living photos featured in Monday's blog does not accomplish is patience. If you haven't seen it yet, wildlife photographer Nicolas Dory, known to us as aasman's web developer is the subject of this month's feature article in Yukon, North of Ordinary. Nicolas shares the stories behind some of his summer shots, and the delicate relationships formed with his subjects as they get close.

your mind may blow - shoot now, focus later

The constraints of photography have been lifted. Gone is the split second lost during autofocus. Gone is an ill chosen depth of field. Gone is the need to squint at a blurry scene in the background of a portrait.

The picture revolution is coming according to Lytro, a company using light field technology to capture all the light rays in a scene with sensors. This allows "both the picture taker and the viewer to focus pictures after they’re snapped, shift their perspective of the scene, and even switch seamlessly between 2D and 3D views."

I won't try to explain more myself, check it out here. http://www.lytro.com

We have a winner!

Congratulations Christiane!

Christiane, who is currently visiting Whitehorse from Switzerland, won aasman's summer solstice challenge. She was a mere 30 seconds from the exact time of 10:53:03. A huge thank you to all 656 people who entered! Your participation and comments really energized our team and made this contest great fun.

Using only social media and aasman staff contacts, we were able to generate over 1,700 visits to our blog in two days! (You might want to read that twice for effect. We sure did.) That translates into over 3,000 views of our website beyond that one blog post during a 30 hour period. We also doubled our blog subscribers.

As most of you probably already know, this was also an internal competition between aasman employees to see who could generate the most hits to our blog. It was an intense couple of days in the office–we got to see who the real cut-throats are around here! It was hilarious and loads of fun.

Thank you to Doug Brown from Copeland Communications in Victoria for masterminding this challenge for us. We gained an incredible amount of insight on social media that we're super-excited to put to work for our clients.

We hope you had an awesome solstice-- looks like summer has finally arrived.
